New Technology for Treatment of Leachate

Biospot Reactor
Testing Rig
Large Reactor Results

BIOSPOT offers technology for “Treatment of Leachate”
from young or capped landfill sites.

Our technology offers the following advantages over
 the current technologies available:

- Biological in nature (selected organisms)

- Removes ammonia, nitrate, sulfites, sulfates and organic carbon (BOD)

- Direct removal of ammonia up to 400mg/L and indirect up
to 1000mg/L (dilution with treated leachate

- Low air requirement (maximum 0.2VVM)

- Completely enclosed plant (no viral /algal infections)

- Compact plant (150KLPD plant needs 100 m 2 area)

- Automatic operation (remote monitoring available)

- Low maintenance cost

- Competitive in cost both initial and running

- Low treatment cost (typical less than a 0.5$ per KL leachate treated)

- On line monitoring of pH and temperature with option of DO,
conductivity, total solids, ammonia and nitrate (if necessary)

- Automatic desludging

Biospot Reactor:

Our reactor is the heart of the equipment and is specially designed
to give high “Oxygen Transfer” and simultaneously achieve
desired denitrification.

Standard size reactor is 30M 3 that can treat 20,000 to
50,000LPD of leachate depending on feed conditions.

The reactor will sustain at 1000LPD feed at 5mg/L ammonia in dry conditions.

Testing Rig:

10L-testing rig is available for testing your leachate.
The rig has been continuously running since February 2003 and
data is presented in the graph for 1400 hours.

Series-2 - Treated leachate

Performance Parameters:

Ammonia removal - 0.3g/L reactor volume/day
Nitrate removal - 0.9g/L reactor volume/day
Maximum Feed Ammonia - 400mg/L
Treated Leachate Ammonia - <5mg/L (at 400mg/L)

A typical curve with leachate from a waste depot in Sydney:

Case 1:

Graph

The above leachate was run on the reactor with dilution rate of 0.66/ day
that means feeding up to 48,000LPD to standard 30,000L reactor.

The ammonia in the treated leachate was less than 5mg/L.
Ammonia removal capacity was 0.224Kg of ammonia/m 3 of reactor/day.

Case-2

Graph

The above leachate was run on the reactor with dilution rate of 1.0/ day
that means feeding up to 30,000LPD to standard 30,000L reactor.

The ammonia in the treated leachate was less than 0.1mg/L.
Ammonia removal capacity was 0.44Kg of ammonia/m3 of reactor/day. Denitrification was achieved in the second pass.

Large Reactor Results:

Graph

The above leachate was run on the reactor at different dilution rate
ranging from 0.4 to 1.0/ day that means feeding up to 12,000 to 30,000LPD
to standard 30,000L reactor.

The feed ammonia is 1780mg/L and in the treated
leachate is less than 400mg/L in one pass.

Ammonia removal capacity is 0.98Kg of ammonia/m3
of reactor/day with 50% of nitrogen oxides converted to nitrogen.
The reactor is being further tested for high strength leachates.
